12 Days of Smile PreCure #11: DAIKYOU

The second day of Smile PreCure brings us the most horrid face to ever grace the Pretty Cure franchise:

Miyuki's face when she gets the worst fortune.

Miyuki’s face when she gets the worst fortune.

The fish-eye lens miyuki reaction face is among the most absurd renditions of an anime girl’s face in quite some time, even outside the realm of Pretty Cure. The franchise itself, renowned for its highly expressive facial depictions from characters like Erika Kurumi (Heartcatch) and Saki Hyuuga (Splash Star), completely outdid itself with this little moment from episode 13, where the class goes on a field trip to Kyoto.

The girls have their fortune read through O-mikuji, and Miyuki, who had already suffered an initial string of unlucky events, picked out daikyou (大凶), the worst possible luck.

The three shots from above have taken on a life of its own, spawning memes within the fanart community. There is even a separate pixiv tag that showcases this ridiculous animation style, with its own unbelievable variations from characters other than Miyuki, and even series other than Smile PreCure:

While other experiences from Smile PreCure may come down as ones that will have a lasting impression on my experience as a fan of the franchise, there is no single image from the show will ever top that of Daikyou Miyuki.

  1. ahahaha this episode was fantastic for comedy even though I felt really bad for Miyuki, but damn she never let it get to her so she wins in my book! Also the crazy fish eye lens made for some hilarious expressions <3

I saw the pixiv gallery wow that was amazing.

    1. I felt pretty bad for her as well, but I’m thankful that most of the laughs weren’t so much at Miyuki’s expense, but rather at how absurdly the situation had escalated. If it happened to Nao or Akane, it would have been just as funny, though I could imagine that Akane’s reactions in particular would have been priceless.
